School Streets

Is the School Streets scheme reducing air pollution?

School Streets implements a traffic ban directly outside schools during peak hours. It makes the roads around schools safer for our children, but is School Streets better for our health?

With the support of Southend-on-Sea City Council we measured the pollution levels at two schools inside the School Streets zone and compared it to levels outside the zone, further down the street, using monitors that measure particulates in the air (PM1, PM2.5, PM4, and PM10), nitrogen dioxide, nitric oxide and ozone.
